Description

A cushion cover 60cm by 40cm, woven from jute and cotton, with a cream cotton warp and natural jute run across it so the face reads as a fine ribbed stripe. Three bands cross the middle: a rust chevron in the centre, and above and below it a row of grey green triangles pointing in towards it. The pattern is printed onto the woven face rather than worked into it, so it sits on the surface and breaks wherever the yarn dips.

At 60 by 40cm this is a rectangle rather than a square, and it sits along the back of a sofa or low in the back of an armchair. The jute gives the cover a dry, coarse handle rather than a soft one, so it holds its shape and stands up against the back of a seat instead of slumping into it. The cover is sold on its own and an inner is bought separately.

Jute and cotton are woven together on a traditional loom, and the pattern is printed by hand with carved wooden blocks, which is why the rust runs heavier in some places than others and the triangles are not identical along the row. Jute is biodegradable and recyclable, quick to grow, and hard wearing while keeping a soft finish. The Zairya range also runs to a 50 by 50cm cushion cover, a rug, a tall pouf and an armchair.
