Our Ylva table lamp takes the shape of a mushroom: a rounded dome shade sitting on a short, softly tapered base, both finished in the same glossy beige. It is 28cm tall and 25.5cm across, and the shade alone is 11cm tall and as wide as the whole lamp, so it reads low and broad rather than tall and slender. The lamp is 90% iron, with PVC and polyester making up the rest, and it weighs 1.15KG.

At 28cm tall it fits where a taller lamp would crowd things: a bedside table, a low side table beside an armchair, or a shelf in a bookcase. A dome shade sends its light downwards, so it lights what sits close to it, the top of a bedside table, a book, the arm of a chair, rather than filling a whole room. That makes it a good second light for winding down in the evening. It is rated IP20, so it belongs in dry rooms: the living room, the bedroom, a hallway or a study. Its compact scale suits a small flat as well as a larger home.

It takes one E27 bulb, up to 40W, or 5W for an LED and 11W for a CFL; the bulb is not included. The top of the bulb sits proud of the crown of the shade, so it is worth choosing one you are happy to see, and a small round globe follows the curve of the dome nicely.
