Yala Hammered Wine Glasses - Dusty Terracotta - Set of 4

Four wine glasses in a dusty terracotta glass, each 12cm tall and 8cm across and holding 190ml. The bowl is a rounded goblet rather than a tulip, and it stands on a short, thick stem and a wide round foot, so the weight sits low. The bowl is hammered all over, dimpled in shallow facets that break the light instead of passing it straight through.

A hundred and ninety millilitres is a measured glass rather than a large pour. The short stem keeps the whole glass to 12cm, low enough to go under a wall cupboard and steady enough to hand round outdoors without the stem being the first thing to go. The hammering gives the bowl a grip a plain glass does not have. All four line along a linen runner.

The glass is recycled: waste glass, melted down and blown by mouth, then gone over with traditional tools while it is still soft to raise the dimpling, which falls differently on every one. The colour is put into the melt rather than on to the surface, so it runs through the thickness and reads deepest through the foot and the stem where the glass is heaviest. Why is the stem so short?

It is made that way, a shorter and thicker stem on a wide foot, which puts the weight of the glass low down.

No. It is carried in the glass itself, so it cannot wear off.

How do I look after them?

Rinse them soon after use rather than leaving them standing, use a mild detergent and do not let them soak. Take care with them.
