Description
The Wistcombe is a wide flush ceiling light, 490mm across and only 130mm deep, with a shallow Tiffany-style shade in multicoloured leaded glass laid out in a radiating starburst pattern. Two 60W E27 GLS bulbs sit behind the glass, supplied separately, and it is dimmable with dimmable bulbs and a compatible dimmer. At 2.4kg it is easy to fix, and because the fitting sits close to the plaster it takes almost no headroom out of the room.
This is the one for low ceilings: cottage bedrooms, loft conversions, landings, hallways and anywhere a hanging pendant would be in the way of a door or a head. Flush ceiling lights are also listed as flush mount or semi-flush fittings, and the appeal is the same, full light output without the drop. At 490mm it covers a good sized room, so we would treat it as the main light rather than a secondary one.
The glass is cut, leaded and soldered panel by panel, so the colour and the seam lines are never quite identical between two shades. The frame and mounting plate are metal, and the shade unclips for bulb changes. It is Class 1, which means an earth connection at the ceiling and a qualified electrician to make it. Dust with a dry, soft cloth and use a barely damp cloth for marks, keeping sprays away from the solder. A Wistcombe table lamp, an inverted pendant and a task floor lamp carry the same pattern if you want to build it out.

Frequently Asked
How much headroom does it need?
Very little. It projects 130mm from the ceiling and measures 490mm across, so it suits ceilings where a pendant would hang too low.
What is the shade made from?
Coloured glass, cut and leaded piece by piece and soldered into a metal frame, in the Tiffany-style method.
Which bulbs does it take?
Two 60W E27 GLS bulbs, supplied separately. Use dimmable bulbs with a compatible dimmer if you want to vary the level.
Is this flush or semi-flush?
It mounts tight to the ceiling, so it is a flush fitting. Some retailers call this style flush mount or semi-flush.
How do I clean the glass?
Dust with a dry, soft cloth, then wipe with a barely damp cloth if needed. Avoid sprays and abrasives around the solder lines.
