Description

These are four stoneware cups, each holding 325ml, a generous size for a large tea, a milky coffee or a hot chocolate rather than a small espresso. Every cup is handpainted in a multicoloured pattern of flowers and leaves, and the handle is what gives them their character: it is shaped as a bird's head and body, with the wings reaching across the side of the cup in raised detail. Each one is 8.5cm across and 9.5cm tall, a comfortable size to hold in both hands on a cold morning.

With four in the set, they suit a small household or a table of four, whether for a slow weekend breakfast, afternoon tea with friends or coffee after supper. The flowers continue around the cup, so they look just as good lined up on an open shelf or a kitchen dresser as they do on the table, and the four together make a thoughtful housewarming gift for someone who likes their tea with a bit of personality. Stoneware holds heat well, which is welcome when a drink is enjoyed slowly.

The cups are 100% stoneware with a handpainted finish, and they are practical for every day: they go in the dishwasher, they can go in the microwave and they can go in the oven. A tea that has gone cold can be warmed again in the cup itself, and none of the four needs to be kept back for washing by hand. The bird handle stands out from the side of the cup, so allow a little room for it on a shelf or in a cupboard. For styling, set the four out together on a wooden tray or a linen runner beside plain tableware, where the handpainted flowers and birds can take the lead.
