Description

The Vivan is a round wall mirror, 88cm across and 4cm deep. The frame is a broad flat ring of mango wood, wide enough to read as a band rather than as an edge, and it is carved all over in fine grooves running round it. The outer rim is notched into small regular beads. The glass sits inside the ring and is held at the inner edge by two small plates.

At 88cm across the mirror carries a wall on its own and does not need anything hung beside it. Hung above a sideboard in a hallway, high enough to clear what stands on the top, it throws the light from the doorway opposite back across the room. At 4cm the frame stands only just off the wall.

The frame is mango wood and the glass is mirror. Every groove is cut by hand, so the spacing and the depth vary round the frame and the wood takes the light unevenly. Mango wood is a by-product of the mango-growing industry in India, re-used rather than grown for timber. The Vivan range also holds a rectangular mirror with the same frame, along with tables, a chest of drawers and a bed.
