Description
The Vivan side table is carved from mango wood in one heavy rounded form. A wide drum of a base rises to a short waisted neck and opens again into a round top 55cm across, and the whole piece stands 45cm tall. Every face is cut in fine vertical grooves, the top included, and the grooves run over the edge of the top so it reads as ridged rather than smooth. The charcoal tone is sanded back by hand, leaving the brown of the wood showing along the raised lines.
Standing beside a sofa its top is level with the seat cushions, which puts a drink or a book within reach of someone sitting down. A 55cm top takes a table lamp and still leaves room around it. The base is a solid drum rather than a set of legs, so it sits flat on a rug with nothing underneath to catch a foot, and at 10.7kg it stays where it is put rather than shifting when leant on.
The table is mango wood, a by-product of the fruit growing in India, cut for timber only once the trees have stopped bearing. The grooves are made with traditional carving tools and the finish is worked back by hand, so the closeness of the lines and the amount of brown showing through differ from table to table. The same grooved form is made as a coffee table, and this side table is also made in a natural finish.

Frequently Asked
How big is the top?
Round, 55cm across, at a height of 45cm.
Will it stand flat on a rug?
Yes. The base is a solid drum that meets the floor in a full circle rather than on legs, so there is no point load to sink into a pile.
Will every table look the same?
Closely, but not exactly. Each table is carved and sanded by hand, so the grooves and the amount of wood showing through the charcoal vary from one to the next.
Does it come in another finish?
Yes. The same table is made in natural mango wood.
How do I look after it?
The surface is sealed. A soft dry cloth lifts dust and moisture, and mild soap and water can be used sparingly, always worked along the grain. Use coasters and mats, take up spills straight away, and keep the table out of strong direct sunlight and away from extremes of heat and humidity.
