Description
The Vivan chest of drawers stands 88cm tall and 105cm wide in solid mango wood, with four drawers: two shallow ones side by side at the top, the left of them wider than the right, and two full width drawers below. Each drawer carries a small carved wooden bar as a pull, one on each of the top pair and two on each of the lower two. The top is a single overhanging plank, its surface combed into fine parallel grooves and its front edge cut into a run of narrow ridges, while the drawer fronts are left plain so the grain runs across them unbroken.
At 105cm wide and 49cm deep this wants a clear run of bedroom wall rather than a narrow hallway, and the top stands at 88cm. The two drawers at the top hold accessories and household oddments, and the two full width drawers below hold folded clothing and bed linen. The top gives 105 by 49cm, which takes a lamp and a tray without either overhanging the front edge.
The wood is mango throughout, left pale and open grained so the figure shows through. Each chest is carved and assembled by hand, and the grooving on the top is cut by hand too, so its depth and its spacing vary from one piece to the next. The back is boarded in vertical planks with an iron ring fixed at each top corner. The Vivan range also holds a wardrobe, a pantry cupboard, a bed in King and Super King, a bedside table, a side table, a coffee table and two mirrors.

Frequently Asked
How many drawers does it have?
Four. Two smaller drawers sit side by side at the top and two full width drawers run below them.
What is it made from?
Solid mango wood throughout, carved and assembled by hand.
Will every chest look the same?
Not exactly. The grain runs differently through every board, and the grooving on the top is cut by hand, so its depth and spacing vary from piece to piece.
How do I look after it?
Wipe the surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth to lift dust and moisture. Mild soap and water can be used, but not a great deal of water, and always wipe in the direction of the grain. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive materials away from it, stand wet items on mats and coasters rather than on the wood, and mop up spills straight away with a dry paper towel followed by a damp lint free cloth.
Where should it not stand?
Out of strong or direct sunlight, which fades the wood, and away from extreme heat or sharp swings in humidity, which can crack and split it. In a bathroom it needs good ventilation and controlled humidity.
