Description

An outdoor wall light built as a plain brass cylinder held clear of a round back plate on a short arm. The cylinder stands 18cm tall and is open at both ends, so light leaves it upwards and downwards at once. It is made in three sections with the joints left visible as rings round the body, and the brass has been aged to a soft, uneven brown gold that is darker in the hollows than on the faces.

Mounted either side of a door, the two beams wash the wall above and below the fitting and leave the doorway lit from the side. On rough stone or brickwork the light picks up the texture of the wall. It stands 10cm out from the wall and measures 9cm across, so it clears a reveal or a porch frame without fouling a door on its swing. It is rated IP44, which covers splashing water from any direction, and it is built for use outdoors.

The fitting is solid brass, hand forged by local makers in small batches down to the nuts and bolts. The brass oxidises in the weather, so it darkens and shifts over time rather than holding the surface it arrives with. It takes a GU10 bulb to a maximum of 40W, and it can be run on a dimmer.
