Varli 60 x 90cm Jute & Cotton Doormat - Natural

A flat woven mat of jute and cotton, 90cm long and 60cm wide, in the straw colour of undyed jute with black cotton run through it in bands. The bands are not evenly spaced: some are solid black, some a fine black and natural check, and they fall in loose groups across the length rather than in a repeat. A knotted cream cotton fringe finishes each of the shorter ends.

At 60 by 90cm this is a wide mat rather than a narrow runner, and it will lie inside a standard front door with room on either side of the swing. It is made for indoor use, at an entrance, in a hallway or by a back door. The weave is flat rather than piled, but the mat still stands 2cm off the floor, so a door with less clearance than that will catch on it.

Jute and cotton are woven together on a handloom, the jute carrying the body of the mat and the cotton the black pattern. Jute is a rain fed crop that needs little fertiliser or pesticide, and it spins into a thick strong thread rather than a fine one, which is why the surface is coarse underfoot. The black comes from cotton woven into the mat rather than from a print laid on the top.

Can it go outside the door?

It is made for indoor use. Lay it on the inside of the door rather than out in the weather.

Will it shed?

Some shedding of fibre is to be expected from a mat woven in jute and cotton.

How do I clean it?

Blot spills straight away with a clean sponge, and vacuum with care. Avoid a vacuum with a rotating brush, which can damage the fibres. It can be professionally cleaned, and the colours may fade in direct sunlight.
