Description

A side plate 20cm across and 2.5cm high, in Portuguese earthenware under a layered reactive glaze. A spiral runs out from the centre of the face, raised enough to catch the light and to read under a finger, and the glaze breaks darker along the rim and speckles across the well. The grey runs from a pale oatmeal at the centre to a deeper tone at the edge.

At 20cm this is a side plate rather than a dinner plate, for bread, a starter or a pudding beside a larger one. It is dishwasher safe, microwave safe and food safe. Valinha also runs to a dinner plate, a cereal bowl, a serving bowl, a footed bowl, a round platter and two jugs.

The clay is local Portuguese earthenware, poured by hand into moulds and finished by hand afterwards. The reactive glaze goes on in layers and moves in the kiln, so the tone varies from plate to plate and the speckling falls differently on every one. It weighs 0.39kg and is sold singly.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

20cm across and 2.5cm high.

Is it dishwasher safe?

Yes, and microwave safe, and food safe.

Will every plate look the same?

Not exactly. The reactive glaze moves in the kiln, so the tone and the speckling come out differently on every plate.

Is it sold in a set?

No. This is one plate. Valinha is also sold as a twelve piece dinnerware set.

How should it be looked after?

Wash it after every use so that it does not stain, with a mild detergent, and do not leave it to soak. Handle it carefully, because earthenware chips.
