Description

A solid stone weight with an iron ring through the top of it, 24cm high, 18cm across and 11kg on the floor. The stone is cut as a squat drum with a deep groove round its waist and a smaller domed knob above, and it is dark, close to black, shot through with pale grey speckling. The surface is left worked rather than smoothed: tool marks across the whole body, and a band of short vertical notches cut round the shoulder. The ring is a single loop of iron, wide enough to take a hand.

Eleven kilograms is the point of it. It holds a door open against a draught, and it is heavy enough that the door moves before the stop does. The ring is what makes it liftable, since the stone gives nothing to grip. At 24cm it stands well clear of a skirting board, and it does the same work holding down the corner of a rug.

The body is stone and the ring is iron. The shape is taken from a traditional Indian weight, the kind once used for weighing grain and then as often for pinning down the corner of a tent or a carpet. It belongs indoors and not on a step or a path.
