Description

This brown rattan vase has the full, rounded outline of a two-handled urn: a round body, a short neck that flares out to a wide rim, and two curved handles that loop from the shoulder to the rim. It stands 25.5cm tall and measures 25cm across, so it reads as a substantial piece on a table or shelf rather than a small bud vase. The finish is braided rattan, woven in rows around the body, and a plaited band forms the foot that lifts it clear of the surface.

It suits a console, sideboard, hallway table or wide windowsill, anywhere a piece of this size can stand without crowding. Dried flowers and long stems sit well in the wide neck, and the open weave lets a little light through the body, which stops a large vase from looking heavy. The woven texture sits comfortably in a living room or bedroom beside linen, pale wood and plaster walls, and it is a good choice for anyone who decorates with texture rather than pattern. At 1.1KG it is light enough to move between rooms as the seasons change, and the two handles give it a shape that looks considered from every side.

Rattan, iron and glass make up the vase, and the upright ribs visible between the woven rows give the round body its structure. Rattan is a light, pliable cane, which is what allows it to be braided into curves as full as these. It does not go in the dishwasher, the microwave or the oven; it is a piece for flowers, stems and display. For a simple arrangement, three or four tall dried stems at different heights show off the curve of the handles better than a full bunch.
