Description
The Umbra is an 84cm flush ceiling light built from five overlapping circular discs in matt gold, matt black, matt white and two smaller opal diffusers, arranged asymmetrically on a single mounting plate. An integrated 48W 3000K LED sits behind each disc, casting soft indirect light upwards and downwards through the diffusers and creating a halo effect around each circular element where it meets the ceiling.
Designed for rooms with ceiling heights of 2.4m or lower where a pendant or semi-flush would hang too close to head height, the Umbra sits just 6cm below the ceiling line while providing enough output to serve as primary lighting in a 4m x 5m living room, bedroom or open-plan kitchen-diner. The asymmetric disc layout gives the fitting a sculptural presence when viewed from different angles in the room, breaking the symmetry typical of most flush fittings. The light is dimmable via both TRIAC (leading-edge/trailing-edge wall dimmers) and 0-10V commercial dimming systems, allowing output to be reduced from full brightness to a low ambient level for evening use.
The combined weight of the metal discs and integrated LED driver is 6.44kg, which requires secure fixing into either a ceiling joist or a substantial plasterboard anchor. Gravity toggles are included in the box to allow installation into plasterboard ceilings without needing to locate a joist. The gold, black and white finishes are all powder-coated metal with a low-sheen matt surface, so the discs read as solid colour blocks rather than reflective metallics. The IP20 rating limits the fitting to dry indoor locations only.

Frequently Asked
Is the Umbra dimmable?
Yes. The integrated LED driver supports both TRIAC dimming (compatible with most UK leading-edge and trailing-edge wall dimmers) and 0-10V dimming systems. Check your dimmer model compatibility with Schuller or Niori before installation if using TRIAC, as not all dimmers handle 48W LED loads equally.
What ceiling height does it suit?
The 6cm projection makes the Umbra suitable for ceilings from 2.2m upwards, particularly where pendant lights would hang into the walking or sitting space. The 48W output is sufficient to light a room up to approximately 20m² as primary lighting.
How is it mounted on plasterboard ceilings?
Gravity toggles are included in the box for plasterboard installation. The 6.44kg weight requires either two toggles rated for 4kg+ each, or fixing into a ceiling joist. Follow the assembly instruction PDF linked in the Downloads tab for the specific mounting method Schuller recommends.
Can it be used in bathrooms?
No. The IP20 rating limits the Umbra to dry indoor spaces only. It is not suitable for bathroom zones or any location where moisture or water spray is present.
