Description

The Knightsbridge T5228EM is a twin-lamp 4ft T5 fluorescent batten with integrated emergency lighting function, accepting two 28W T5 fluorescent tubes (sold separately). The white pressed steel body houses a high-frequency ballast that soft-starts the lamps to reduce stress on strike and extends lamp life over conventional magnetic ballast systems.

Designed for offices, schools, retail stockrooms, corridors and public-access areas where emergency backup lighting is required by building regulations, the batten can operate in maintained, non-maintained or switched emergency modes. Maintained mode keeps the lamps lit continuously on mains power and switches to battery on power failure; non-maintained mode only activates the lamps during a power cut; switched mode allows normal on/off control with automatic emergency activation when mains power is lost. The 1175mm length suits standard 4ft fluorescent tube spacing.

The batten mounts to ceiling or wall using the end-bracket system, with cable entry points on each end cap. The IP20 rating limits use to dry interior spaces, and the Class I earthing requirement means the installation must connect to a mains earth terminal. The polycarbonate lamp holders and end caps resist impact better than ceramic equivalents in high-traffic areas. Emergency battery capacity and runtime depend on lamp wattage and emergency mode selected — see the specification sheet in Downloads for full detail.

Frequently Asked

What's the difference between maintained, non-maintained and switched emergency modes?

Maintained mode keeps the lamps on continuously when mains power is available and switches to battery backup during a power cut. Non-maintained mode only lights the lamps during a power failure, leaving them off when mains is present. Switched mode allows normal on/off control via a wall switch but automatically activates emergency lighting when mains power is lost.

Are the fluorescent tubes included?

No. The batten requires two 28W T5 fluorescent tubes, sold separately. Standard 4ft T5 tubes with G5 cap fittings are compatible.

Can this be used in bathrooms or outdoor covered areas?

No. The IP20 rating limits the batten to dry interior spaces with no water ingress risk. Bathrooms, outdoor canopies and damp storage areas require higher IP-rated fittings.

How long does the emergency battery last during a power cut?

Emergency runtime depends on the lamp wattage, battery capacity and emergency mode selected. Typical non-maintained emergency battens provide 3 hours of backup lighting. See the product specification sheet in Downloads for exact runtime and battery detail for this model.
