Description

The Tussi Mara is a 50cm square cushion cover, handwoven in wool. The middle is a dusty pink field carrying a large stepped diamond drawn in cream, and at the heart of it a smaller diamond worked in raised loops of charcoal and rust that stand well proud of the flat weave around them. Down one side run a charcoal band, a twisted cord of rust and cream laid along the surface, then cream and charcoal stripes. Down the other are a charcoal stripe and a honeycomb-textured band in cream and pink. The two sides are not a mirror image of each other.

50cm square is the common size for a sofa cushion, so it takes a standard 50cm inner, and the cover is heavy enough in the hand at 0.487kg to sit properly rather than slump. Because the two borders differ, turning the cover a quarter turn puts a different band along the top edge, which is worth doing if two of them sit side by side on the same sofa. The raised loops and the applied cord stand a few millimetres proud of the flat weave, so in side light from a window the cover carries its own shadow across the diamond.

The fabric is wool, woven on a traditional Indian handloom, one of the oldest crafts in the country, and finished with a thick cotton backing. There are other cushion covers in the Tussi range. The inner is not included.
