Description

The Tussi Ami is a 50 by 50cm cushion cover, handwoven in wool over a thick cotton backing. The face is worked in horizontal bands: rows of stepped, arrow-like motifs in charcoal and grey brown across a cream ground, a wide middle band carrying a pair of hooked lozenges, and between them narrow rows where the yarn is looped and knotted so it stands proud of the flat weave. The colours run through dusty pink, cream, charcoal and grey brown.

At 50 by 50cm it is the standard square cushion size, and the 1cm figure is the cover lying flat rather than a filled depth, because the inner is bought separately. The looped rows stand off the surface, so the bands catch the light across the face and the pattern reads differently as the light moves round a room. The same Ami design is made in mustard and grey, and the Tussi range also holds a Mara design in the same dusty pink and a 60 by 40cm oblong.

The face is 100 per cent wool and the backing is a thick cotton. It is woven on a traditional Indian handloom, one of the oldest crafts in the country, and worked by hand throughout, so the motifs shift by a fraction from cover to cover and the ground is never quite even. The cushion inner is not included.
