Description

The Tunda is a doormat woven from jute, 60 by 90cm and 2cm thick. The weave is a heavy basket grid: bundles of jute run over and under one another in blocks, turning through ninety degrees at every square, so the surface stands in low ridges rather than lying flat. Both short ends finish in a knotted fringe. The colour is the fibre left as it comes, a pale straw that goes a shade darker along the top of each bundle where the light catches the twist.

At 60 by 90cm it covers the width of a standard doorway and gives two full paces inside it. The ridged weave takes grit off the sole of a shoe and holds it down between the bundles rather than pushing it to the edges. This doormat is for indoor use: it goes inside the door rather than on a step or in a porch. At 2cm it is a thick mat, so an inward opening door needs clearance over it.

Jute is a rain fed crop with little need for fertiliser or pesticide, and the fibre spins into a thread strong enough to take a weave this heavy. The mat is woven, braided and stitched by hand on a traditional handloom. Some shedding of fibre is to be expected from a natural material, and the colour can fade where the mat lies in direct sunlight.
