Description
The Trident Shield is a round bulkhead wall light in solid brass with an antique brass finish, built in the shape of a ship's porthole. A curved half shield covers the upper part of the face, with a slim upright slot cut into it and a domed boss at its centre, while clear ribbed glass fills the lower half, its ribs fanning out from the middle. It measures 19cm in diameter and weighs 1.7KG. Rated IP64, it is dust-tight and protected from splashing water, so it can live outdoors through a British winter.
It belongs on an outside wall: beside a front door, in a porch, on a garden wall or on a boathouse, where a round brass bulkhead looks at home. The maker says its bulkheads were designed for outdoor places that call for an industrial or nautical effect, and describes this one as having something of an old British motoring feel. The maker also says the maritime influence of the range shows in its materials, its designs and even its names. It suits a coastal cottage or a town house that wants a little character by the door, and at IP64 it can also go in a bathroom, where a qualified electrician will confirm the right zone.
The body is solid brass with what the maker calls an aged, original-looking finish, and solid brass darkens and mellows outdoors, so the light settles into its setting over the years. The cable comes in through a gland at the end or the rear, and a brass blank is included to close whichever entry goes unused, so you can choose the entry that suits the wall. It takes one E27 lamp, the common household screw fitting also known as ES. As with any mains light, a qualified electrician should install it, and it is worth agreeing beforehand which entry they will use.
