Description

The Tiwa is a tapered drum wound in fine jute cord, the cord laid vertically from the top rim to the bottom in hundreds of close parallel lines. The surface reads as a fine stripe rather than a weave, the brass fitting ring shows inside the top, and the slight variation in cord thickness keeps the lines from looking machined. This is the large: 21.5cm tall and 40.5cm across.

Forty centimetres is floor lamp width. On an ordinary side table this overhangs the surface; on a floor lamp base over a metre tall it is in proportion with the column, and at that width the vertical cord becomes the thing you read from across the room rather than a detail noticed close up. Because the winding is dense, light leaves mostly through the open ends, so the shade puts a defined pool on the floor and a wash on the ceiling and keeps its own surface quiet. At 21.5cm deep the lampholder is hidden from a seated eye. It weighs 0.82kg.

Jute is fast growing and biodegradable, taking four to six months from planting to harvest, and it is colourfast. Each shade is wound by hand over its frame, so the spacing differs from one to the next. The Tiwa range runs from small to extra large. No bulb, base or fitting is included.
