Description

The Tiwa is a tapered drum wound in fine jute cord, laid vertically from the top rim to the bottom in hundreds of close parallel lines. This is the extra large, the deepest and widest of the four: 26cm tall and 46cm across, with a taper gentle enough that it reads almost as a cylinder. The brass fitting ring shows inside the top and the cord varies slightly in thickness along its length.

A shade this size sets the proportion of whatever it sits on, so it wants a floor lamp base or a substantial table lamp, and it will overhang most side tables. At 1.04kg it is also the heaviest of the four, which is worth checking against an existing pendant if it is going on a ceiling. The dense winding keeps light inside and sends it out of the open ends, so an extra large Tiwa lights the floor and the ceiling strongly and the middle of the room hardly at all. The lampholder is hidden from any normal angle.

Jute is fast growing and biodegradable, taking four to six months from planting to harvest, and it is colourfast. Each shade is wound by hand over its frame, so the spacing of the cord differs from one to the next. The Tiwa range runs from small to extra large. No bulb, base or fitting is included.
