Description

The Thornmere large pendant is a three light ceiling light with a broad, shallow shade built from cut panels of multicoloured Tiffany-style leaded glass. It measures 425mm across, and the drop adjusts from 380mm up to 1330mm so you can set it to the room rather than the other way round. Three 60W E27 GLS bulbs sit inside the shade and are supplied separately. It is dimmable once you fit dimmable bulbs and a compatible dimmer, which lets you take the coloured glass down to a warm glow in the evening.

At 425mm wide with three lamps, this is a main light rather than an accent, and it earns its place over a dining table, in the middle of a sitting room, or in a hallway with the height to carry it. The leaded pattern throws soft colour onto the ceiling and walls once lit, so it suits period rooms, Victorian and Edwardian houses, and anywhere a plain pendant has felt flat. It is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms, so keep it clear of bathroom zones.

Each piece of glass is cut and leaded individually, then soldered into a frame, so the colour balance and the run of the seams shift a little from one shade to the next. The frame, chain and ceiling rose are metal, and the finished fitting weighs 3.7kg, so fix it to a joist or a proper ceiling anchor. It is Class 1 and needs an earth at the rose, which is work for a qualified electrician. Dust the glass with a dry cloth, wipe with a barely damp one when needed, and keep sprays off the solder lines. A medium Thornmere pendant and matching flush ceiling lights sit alongside it.
