Description

The Thenkara is a desk lamp made entirely of brass and built on a counterweighted arm. A solid rectangular block sits flat on the desk, a plain column rises from it, and a long arm crosses that column at a large knurled pivot, running back past the joint as its own counterweight. At the front end a cylindrical shade with a domed top turns on a second joint. The brass is aged and mottled with the tool marks left in, and a rust braided flex loops from the shade back along the arm.

Two joints and a counterweight are what make it a working lamp rather than a fixed one. The arm swings up and down on the column and the head turns through a full circle on its own joint, so the shade can be aimed at a page, a keyboard or a wall. The shade is closed at the top and open at the mouth, so the light goes where it is pointed and almost none of it spills upward. It stands 55cm tall and reaches 45cm forward, which needs a desk of some depth. It takes one E27 bulb up to 40W and the flex runs 2.5m.

Every part is brass, the adjustable fittings and the screws included, and the lamp is cast and then shaped by hand rather than plated, so the colour runs right through and each one darkens differently where it is handled. At 3.3kg the block holds the arm out at full reach. The Thenkara range also holds a floor lamp on the same counterweighted arm. Bulbs are not included.

How far forward does it reach?

45cm at full extension, so it wants a desk at least that deep. The arm running back past the pivot is the counterweight that keeps it steady out there.

Does the head move as well as the arm?

Both. The arm swings on the column and the head turns through a full circle on its own joint, so the beam can be put on a page or bounced off a wall.

Will the brass stay this colour?

No. It is solid brass throughout rather than a plated finish, so it darkens where hands reach it and holds its tone where they do not.

How do I clean it?

Unplug it first, then a soft dry cloth. Abrasives and harsh chemicals will cut straight through the aged finish.
