Description

A set of three hanging eggs, each 8cm tall and 5cm across, made from recycled cotton paper and painted by hand. No two carry the same pattern: one is cream with teal green stripes drawn down its length, one reverses that as ochre with cream stripes, and the third is plain cream with a broad band washed round its middle in ochre, soft green and apricot. Each hangs from a small brass ring set into the top on a white cord.

They are for spring rather than Christmas, and they hang from bare branches standing in a vase. That is what they are made for: a few branches in a jug, or hung from a shelf edge, a door handle or a cupboard knob. All three together weigh 0.089kg, so a thin branch will carry one without bending. They are made for indoor use.

The paper is made from shredded cotton waste from the fashion industry, upcycled rather than pulped from timber, in a workshop run on solar power and recycled water by women makers. The surface keeps the texture of the handmade sheet, lumpy and fibrous under the paint, and the brush marks show in every stripe. Three eggs are supplied.
