Description

The Teni bench is a long chest in reclaimed wood, 120cm across, 35cm deep and 46cm high, with a lid that lifts on four iron strap hinges set along the back. A slot runs most of the length of the front just beneath the lid, and that is how it opens; there is no handle on it. On top sits a linen seat pad quilted into narrow channels, cut a little wider than the lid so it laps over the front edge. The timber is pale and heavy, with the grain and the knots left proud of the surface.

The seat and the lid are the same surface: 120cm long, 35cm front to back and 46cm from the floor. That suits a hallway, where shoes go into the chest and the lid is there to sit on while they are put on, or the foot of a bed, where it holds spare bedding under a folded quilt. At 35cm front to back it will stand along a corridor wall without closing the passage up.

The wood is reclaimed. It once formed the ceiling beams of traditional Indian homes, and each board has been picked out and cut again, so the grain, the knots and the wear on it are the history of the timber rather than a finish laid over the top. The linen seat pad comes off the lid. Because every board comes from a different beam, the colour and the figure vary across one bench and from one bench to the next.

Frequently Asked

Does the seat lift?

Yes. The whole lid is hinged along the back, and the slot cut into the front panel is what it lifts by.

Is the cushion included?

Yes. A natural linen seat pad comes with the bench. It is removable and it can be washed.

How high is the seat?

46cm from the floor, with a top 120cm long and 35cm front to back.

Is every bench different?

Yes. The wood is reclaimed from old beams, so the colour, the grain and the marks in it change from board to board and from bench to bench.

How do I look after the wood?

A soft dry cloth run over it regularly lifts dust and moisture. Mild soap and a little water will shift a mark, worked along the grain and never in quantity. Harsh chemicals and abrasives damage the finish, wet items belong on a mat rather than straight on the wood, and a spill should be soaked up at once and the patch dried. Keep it out of strong sunlight and away from extreme heat or sharp swings in humidity.
