Description

The Tamil is a cushion cover, 60cm across and 40cm high, woven from a blend of wool and cotton. The weave is plain and textural, and the natural ground is crossed by one narrow line that runs rust for part of its length and grey brown for the rest. A broader flecked band sits along the top edge and along the bottom, and a short grey brown bar stands just above the lower band, right of centre. All of it is carried in the yarn rather than printed on the face. It is supplied as a cover.

At 60 x 40cm this is an oblong rather than a square, so it runs along the back of a sofa or across the width of a bed instead of filling a corner. The muted tones sit under a patterned square rather than against one, which is the way the weave is meant to be used. On a bench or a window seat the oblong follows the depth of the seat, and on an armchair it fills the back without reaching the arms.

The blend is wool and cotton, woven on a traditional Indian handloom. The simple textural weave brings the softness of the fibres to the face. The Tamil also comes as a 50 x 50cm square in the same weave and the same tones.
