Description

The larger Taara is an eight-pointed star 31cm across and 30cm tall, in triangular panels of antiqued mirror glass set into a soldered metal frame finished in antique brass. Four long points run up, down and out to the sides with four shorter ones between them, all rising from a faceted boss at the centre, and the star stands 8cm deep. The silvering has been broken up rather than left bright, so the panels read as frost rather than as a mirror.

At 31cm across and 0.5kg this is the size that hangs on its own: from a hook in a wall, in a window, or off the newel of a staircase, rather than from a branch. Mirror glass returns what is in front of it, so what shows in the panels is the room and whatever light is in it rather than the wall behind. The two sizes hang together, the large above and the small below and to one side.

The panels are mercury glass, weathered to a frosted patina, and each is cut to fit the frame it sits in. The frame is shaped and soldered by hand, so the joins show along every rib and no two stars carry the weathering in the same places. Taara also runs at 21cm across.
