Description

A hollow egg 13cm tall and 9cm across, moulded from recycled cotton paper and finished cream with fine teal stripes running from the base to the tip. It stands upright on its broad end without a holder. The egg comes apart around the middle into a deep base and a domed cap, with a raised collar inside the rim of the base that the cap sits down over. The stripes are drawn by hand, so the spacing wanders and some of them double up.

It is a box as much as a decoration. The base takes small chocolate eggs, and the cap lifts away and lies alongside. Closed and filled it sits at a place setting or goes into a basket as a small gift; closed and empty it stands on a shelf, a mantelpiece or an Easter table as a plain striped form. Because it stands on its own it needs no nest or holder to keep it upright.

The egg is recycled cotton paper, made from shredded cotton fabric waste from the clothing industry and turned into paper by hand. The workshop that makes it runs on solar power and recycled water and employs women from the surrounding community. Each egg is handmade and the stripes are drawn individually, so no two carry quite the same spacing. The Surya range also holds a side opening egg in ochre and cream. The egg is supplied empty.
