Description

An ochre egg moulded from recycled cotton paper, with fine cream lines drawn lengthwise from one end to the other. It splits along its side rather than across the middle, so it opens into two long shallow halves, each of them a boat shape with a flat rim. The paper is matte and visibly rough, and the lines are laid on by hand, wandering a little and breaking where the surface dips.

Closed, it stands on end. Open, the two halves lie flat and hold what is in them with nothing over the top, which is what the side opening gives: a pair of small dishes out of one egg. It goes at a place setting, on an Easter table, or on a shelf the rest of the year.

The egg is recycled cotton paper, made by upcycling shredded cotton fabric waste from the clothing industry. The paper is produced in a workshop run on solar power and recycled water, in partnership with women led teams. Each one is handmade, so the weight of the lines and the depth of the ochre vary from egg to egg. The Surya range also holds an egg that opens across the middle, in teal and cream.

Frequently Asked

How does it open?

Along its side. The two halves come apart lengthwise, which gives a pair of long shallow dishes.

Is this one egg?

Yes, one.

How big is it?

13cm from end to end and 9cm across.

Can it go outside?

No. Indoor use only. It is a container and not a toy, and small children should not be left to play with it.

How do I look after it?

Take dust off with a dry, soft cloth and handle it gently. Harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners will mark the surface.
