Description

The Som is a round wall clock, 40cm across and 2.5cm deep. The edge is worked up into a rounded rim so the face sits a little below it, like a shallow dish, and the numerals run round the face from one to twelve in plain dark figures. The face is made up of boards laid side by side, so bands of paler and darker mango wood run straight across it, and the hands are iron and dark against them.

40cm is a clock for a kitchen or a hall, large enough to read from the far side of a room without taking the wall over. At 2.5cm deep it sits close in, and at 1.59kg it hangs from one fixing. On a plain wall with nothing else near it the rim and the shadow under it read best. It is for indoor use.

The face is mango wood and the hands are iron. Mango is used here for its pale tone and for the variation that runs through the grain, and because every face is cut from different boards, no two clocks come out with the same banding across them.
