Single 6ft T8 70W Emergency Batten - White

The Knightsbridge T8170EMHF is a 1791mm (6ft) single-tube fluorescent emergency batten housing one T8 70W lamp socket with integrated 3-hour emergency backup. The steel body runs a high-frequency ballast to reduce flicker and improve lamp efficiency, and the unit can be wired for maintained, non-maintained or switched emergency operation depending on site requirements.

Designed for corridors, stairwells, storage areas, back-of-house zones and multi-occupancy buildings where emergency lighting is mandated by building regulations, the batten provides both general illumination on mains power and automatic failover to battery power during a mains outage. The 3-hour emergency duration meets UK fire safety standards for escape route lighting in most residential and commercial premises.

The white-finished steel body measures 1791mm long by 61mm wide, with an 82mm projection from the ceiling or wall when surface-mounted. The IP20 rating limits the batten to dry indoor locations — it is not suitable for bathrooms, outdoor canopies or damp industrial areas. The T8 lamp is sold separately, allowing the installer to choose the preferred colour temperature (typically 3000K warm white, 4000K neutral white or 6500K cool white) and lumen output to suit the application.

The high-frequency ballast reduces the visible flicker associated with older magnetic ballasts and improves the lamp's power factor, which lowers energy consumption compared to traditional 50Hz gear. The emergency module charges automatically on mains power and switches to battery mode within one second of detecting a power cut, providing uninterrupted light during evacuation or fault conditions.

What's the difference between maintained and non-maintained emergency mode?

In maintained mode the lamp operates continuously on mains power and switches to battery during an outage. In non-maintained mode the lamp only illuminates when mains power fails, staying off during normal operation. The batten supports both wiring configurations — the choice depends on whether the light is needed during normal occupancy or only during evacuation.

Does it come with a T8 lamp?

No. The T8 70W lamp is sold separately. Most installers pair this batten with a 6ft T8 tube in 3000K, 4000K or 6500K depending on the application — warmer tones for residential corridors, neutral or cool white for industrial or commercial use.

How long does the battery last?

The integrated emergency module provides 3 hours of battery backup during a mains power outage. This meets UK building regulation requirements for escape route lighting in most premises. The battery charges automatically when mains power is restored.

Can it be used outdoors or in bathrooms?

No. The IP20 rating means the batten is suitable only for dry indoor locations. It is not rated for moisture, dust ingress or outdoor exposure. For bathrooms, kitchens or outdoor canopies, an IP44- or IP65-rated emergency batten is required.
