Description

A hurricane lamp, 28cm tall, in silver. At 23cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. An odd number of candles at different heights reads as arranged; an even number at the same height reads as a place setting. Both are useful, for different evenings.

A cool metal finish reflects white rather than yellow, which sharpens a room instead of warming it. Beside a window it disappears; against a dark wall it draws a bright outline. Stainless steel resists corrosion through its own chemistry rather than a coating, so there is no finish to chip and nothing underneath waiting to rust when it does. Leather is the only covering that improves with age rather than merely surviving it. It darkens unevenly where it is handled or catches the light, and reads as older rather than shabbier. Glass borrows its colour from whatever sits behind it, so the same piece looks warmer against a painted wall than against a window. It shows dust sooner than an opaque finish, and cleans in seconds.

Look for a drip lip or a wide foot if it is going on a polished surface, because wax on wood is far harder to remove than wax on stone.

Dusting is all it asks for, with a damp cloth on the finish and nothing solvent or abrasive.
