Description

A cushion cover 60 by 40cm, screen printed by hand onto a heavyweight cotton with a slubby, uneven weave. The pattern is drawn from worn textile designs: a rust and terracotta ground with an ornate border running down one side and large cream and pale teal motifs scattered across the rest, with deeper greens picked out between them. The weave shows through every part of the print, so the surface reads as fabric first and pattern second. An inner is not included.

At 60 by 40cm this is a long cushion rather than a square one, so it lies across the back of a sofa, along a bed or in the small of a chair back rather than standing up in a corner. On a plain or neutral sofa the rust ground is what reads first. The pattern is not symmetrical, so the border sits to one side instead of running down the middle.

The cotton is heavyweight with a slubby texture, chosen so the print sits down into the weave rather than flat on top of it. Each cover is screen printed by hand using traditional Indian techniques, the pattern laid on in stages by skilled makers, so the register of the colours and the weight of the ink differ from one cover to the next. The rust and terracotta ground is layered with soft creams and a subtle teal, and the same cover is made in a green as well.

Lift a spill first with an absorbent tissue, then blot the area with a sponge or a folded towel moistened in lukewarm water, and dry the patch by blowing warm air across it from a hair dryer so that it does not water mark. Larger or more stubborn marks should go to a professional. The covers are tested for colourfastness.
