Description

A five-pointed star of clear glass panels held in a brass frame, 35cm tall, 37.5cm across and 8cm deep. Glass closes the front, the back and every edge, so the star is a sealed volume rather than an outline, and the frame runs as a narrow line down each seam. Inside, where the five inner points meet, a small brass platform takes a tealight. A rounded handle arches above the two upper points.

The star rests on its two lower points and needs nothing to prop it. This is the larger of the two Sanwi stars, and at 37.5cm across it carries a mantelpiece or a wide window ledge by itself; beside the 26.5cm one and lit, the frames throw crossed lines onto the wall behind. It suits a wedding table as readily as a mantelpiece at Christmas. The handle is for carrying, not for hanging.

Glass and brass, cut and soldered by hand, so the run of the seams and the depth of the antique finish differ from star to star. The brass is left mottled rather than polished, going darker where it has been worked. At 1.4kg it sits still on a hard surface once it is set down. A tealight is not included.
