Sanja Small Cotton Stripe Lampshade - Off White & Grey

The Sanja is a straight sided drum in handwoven cotton, off white with a fine dark stripe running vertically at close intervals. The stripe is not printed but woven and stitched in, so each one sits slightly proud of the ground and wavers a little rather than running dead straight, and the cotton itself is a coarse plain weave with the slub left in. The sides do not taper, which is unusual among these shades and gives it a squarer profile. This is the small: 20cm tall and 24cm across.

A vertical stripe does something a plain shade cannot: it draws the eye up rather than around, so a small Sanja makes a short base look taller than the same size of plain shade would. At 24cm across it fits a small to medium base and it will not overhang a bedside table. The cotton is dense enough to keep most of the light inside, so the stripes read as a pattern rather than lighting up, and what leaves the shade goes through the open ends. It fits a table lamp, a floor lamp or a ceiling pendant. It weighs 0.34kg.

The stripe is stitched onto the woven cotton by hand, so its spacing and the exact line of it differ from shade to shade. The Sanja range runs from this small through medium and large to extra large. No bulb, base or fitting is included.

Is the stripe grey or black?

It is described as grey and it reads closer to charcoal than to a mid grey, particularly against the off white ground. Lit, it softens.

Is it a straight drum or a taper?

Straight. The sides run parallel, so the top and bottom are the same width, which is what gives it a squarer look than the tapered shades here.

Which base does the small suit?

A small to medium one. At 24cm across it covers a bedside or a slim turned base without overhanging the table.

How do I care for it?

Handle it by the fitting rather than the fabric, and lift dust off with a soft brush or a microfibre cloth.
