Description

The Sanja is a straight sided drum in handwoven cotton, off white with a fine dark stripe stitched in at close intervals. The stripes sit proud of the ground and waver slightly, and the cotton is a coarse plain weave with the slub left in. The sides run parallel rather than tapering. This is the large: 26cm tall and 35cm across, which is the point at which the stripe stops being a detail and becomes the pattern of the room.

At 35cm across it suits a wide table lamp or a floor lamp base, and its depth of 26cm means the lampholder is hidden from any normal angle. A straight drum this size reads as a cylinder rather than a cone, which sits better under a low ceiling than a wide taper does, and hung as a pendant it presents the same face from every direction. The cotton holds most of the light inside, so the stripes stay as a woven pattern rather than lighting up. It weighs 0.52kg.

The stripe is stitched onto the woven cotton by hand over an iron frame, so its spacing and line differ from shade to shade. The Sanja range runs from small through medium and this large to extra large. No bulb, base or fitting is included.
