The Rio Wall Light is a modern wall light built around a deep dome shade in terracotta, a warm, earthy clay colour. The shade hangs from a short horizontal arm that runs out from a round wall plate, with a small round cap joining arm and dome at the top. The structure is iron, and the plate, arm and shade all carry the same terracotta finish, so the fitting reads as one clean shape on the wall. The dome is open at its base, so its light is directed downwards rather than out into the room. It comes in three sizes, 9cm, 12cm and 16cm, all in terracotta, so you can choose the scale that suits your wall.

This is an indoor wall light, made for the places where a pool of light on the wall does more than a ceiling light can. We like it in a hallway or along a landing, where a pair spaced along the wall gives a steady rhythm, and either side of a bed, where it keeps the bedside table clear. It works well beside an armchair in a living room or over a sideboard in a dining room. The 9cm suits a tight spot such as a narrow hallway, while the 12cm and 16cm hold their own on a broader wall. Its clean, modern lines sit comfortably in Scandinavian interiors and in rooms built on natural tones and pale woods.

The iron structure gives it a proper metal build, and the terracotta finish runs right through, from the wall plate to the rim of the shade. There is very little to it, just the dome, the arm and the plate, and that is its appeal: it brings colour to a wall without fuss.
