The Rio is a linear chandelier in matt black: three dome shades hang in a row beneath a slim horizontal bar, which is suspended on two fine wires, with a black textile cable running across to a round ceiling canopy. The structure is iron, finished in matt black, and the whole fitting is 90cm long and 14cm tall, with each shade 12cm across and an 8cm canopy at the ceiling. It takes three GX53 lamps, one in each shade, and works from an ordinary on-off switch, so it needs no dimmer.

A linear fitting like this comes into its own over a long surface. We like it above a dining table, where the three shades spread the light along its length, and it sits just as well over a sideboard or a long desk in a study. The clean lines and plain dark finish suit modern and Scandinavian rooms, and it looks especially good against pale walls, light oak and simple linen. It is rated IP20, so it is for dry rooms only: a dining room, living room, study or hallway. It comes with a 2m textile cable.

The iron structure is finished in matt black, which keeps reflections down and lets the shapes of the shades read clearly, and the textile cable adds a soft, tailored detail where it leaves the bar.
