Description

An outdoor wall light cast in aluminium and finished in antique brass. A rectangular back plate carries a square arm out 27.5cm from the wall, and on the end of the arm sits a shallow cone of a shade pointing downwards. Under the cone a clear hammered glass dome closes over the lamp. The casting is rough all over: the sand mould leaves a pitted, uneven surface with the tool marks still in it, so no two pieces carry the same face.

The arm holds the lamp 27.5cm clear of the wall and the cone throws the light down, so it lights what is under it rather than the wall behind it. That suits a door, a path or a flight of steps, where the useful light is at foot level. The fitting is 19cm tall and 18cm wide, small against a house wall. It takes a G9 bulb of up to 28W and it is dimmable.

The body is sandcast aluminium and the dome is glass. In sandcasting the mould is made from sand and the aluminium is heated until it runs, then poured in and left to cool before the piece is taken out, which is why the surface comes out rough and the patination irregular. The antique brass is applied afterwards. The glass is hammered, so the light coming through it breaks up rather than reading as a single point. It weighs 1.78kg.

Frequently Asked

What bulb does it take?

A G9, up to 28W.

Is it dimmable?

Yes.

Which way does the light go?

Down. The cone shades the lamp from above and the glass dome sits below it, so the light falls on whatever is underneath.

Why is the metal rough?

It is sandcast. The mould is made from sand, which leaves a pitted, uneven surface, and the patination comes out differently on every piece.

How do I look after it?

Take a soft bristle brush over the fixings about once a month, then wipe the fitting and the glass with a microfibre cloth so dust and dirt do not build up. Nothing abrasive and no harsh chemicals, as both will damage the finish.
