Ratnam Small Giant Glass Bauble - Merlot

The merlot Ratnam is a faceted glass drop, 20cm tall and 8cm across, hung from an antique brass cap. Flat panels fall from the widest point under the cap to a single point at the base and meet along crisp vertical ridges. The colour is in the glass itself, an even deep crimson that goes darker where the planes turn away from the light and lifts towards raspberry where they face it. The cap is stamped round its edge and carries a small finial and a wide ring, with a knotted suede tie through the ring.

At 20cm it hangs on its own. The suede tie loops over a branch, a curtain pole, a beam or a handle without needing a hook. The colour sits at the same depth on every face rather than pooling in patches, so the bauble reads as one solid crimson from across a room and shows its facets only close to. The large merlot is 25cm tall and 9cm across.

The glass is recycled and each bauble is blown by hand into the faceted form, so the ridges do not land identically and the tone shifts a little between one and the next. The merlot is one of two colourways and the other is an antique pink. The range also runs to smaller Ratnam baubles in sets of four and eight.

Is the colour painted on?

No. The glass itself is coloured, so the crimson runs right through the wall rather than sitting on the surface of it.

Will every bauble look the same?

Not exactly. Each one is blown by hand, so the facets and the depth of the crimson vary from bauble to bauble.

How do I look after it?

A dry, soft cloth will take off dust. Handle it with care, keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners off the finish, and keep it indoors.
