Description

The Ratnam Giant Bauble is a hand blown glass drop, 25cm long and 9cm across, faceted like a cut stone rather than blown round. Flat planes run down from a narrow shoulder, widen out about two thirds of the way down, then cut back sharply to a single point at the bottom, and the ridges where the planes meet read as hard lines against the flat of each face. The glass is coloured merlot right through, deep enough to go almost black where a face folds away from the light. A fluted antique gold cap with a finial and a large ring sits on top, and a sari tie is knotted through the ring.

At 25cm this is a hanging decoration for one strong position rather than one of a crowd. On a tree it wants a low outer branch with nothing pressing against it, and it will hang equally from a mantel, a stair rail or a door frame on its own tie. Hung where a lamp or a string of lights sits behind it, the colour comes up through the glass and the ridges throw a harder highlight than a round bauble would.

The glass is recycled and is coloured through its thickness rather than on the surface. Each one is blown by hand, so the tone runs lighter on one face than another and the surface carries a faint cloudiness in places. Every sari tie is cut from a different length of fabric, so no two are alike. The same bauble is made at 20cm, and in an antique pink as well as merlot, with smaller Ratnam baubles sold in mixed sets.
