Description

A photo frame for an 8 by 10 inch print, cast in aluminium and finished antique brass. It measures 28.5cm by 23.5cm overall, and the border carries a dense run of fine ribs cut across its width, mitred at the corners so the ribbing turns through a right angle and fans where the four sides meet. The casting is left uneven, so the brass sits brighter on the ridges and darker in the grooves between them.

It stands on a folding wire strut hinged to the back, and it will hang on a wall instead. It is made in a larger size as well, and the two stand side by side on a console with the larger one set behind the smaller. At 2cm deep it holds the print behind glass and sits close to whatever it leans on.

The frame is sand cast aluminium and the glazing is glass. Sand casting means a mould is packed in sand, the aluminium is heated until it runs, and the casting is lifted out once it has cooled; almost all of the material can go round again, and the antique brass finish is applied afterwards. Because the mould surface is never identical twice, no two frames carry quite the same texture. The same frame is made for a 5 by 7 inch print.
