Description

A photo frame for a 5 by 7 inch picture, cast in aluminium and finished in antique brass. The border is a broad band worked with close parallel grooves that run across it from the opening out to the edge, so the surface catches the light in fine lines rather than lying flat. The casting is uneven and textured, with the brass darkening into the hollows. The frame is 20.5cm tall, 15.5cm wide and 2.5cm deep, and the opening measures 12.5 by 17.75cm.

It is portrait, and it will stand or hang. A brass strut is fitted to the black backing board for standing, and the frame can go on a wall instead. At 20.5cm tall it belongs on a shelf, a mantelpiece or the top of a chest of drawers. The 2.5cm depth is the whole thickness, so it sits flat to a wall when it is hung.

The frame is sand cast aluminium with a glass front. A mould is packed in sand, the aluminium is melted and poured into it, and the casting is lifted out once it has cooled, a process in which nearly every material can be recovered and used again. The antique brass is applied to the casting afterwards, which is why the depth of colour varies from frame to frame. The Ranoli frame is made in this 5 by 7 size and in an 8 by 10.
