Description

A basket coiled by hand from seagrass rope, 30cm high and 32.5cm across. The body swells outwards from a flat base to its widest point about two thirds of the way up, then draws in to a short neck and turns out again into a broad rolled rim that stands well proud of the wall. The rope is natural straw for most of its length, with bands of a soft moss green wound through the body at intervals.

The mouth is 32.5cm across and the rim rolls outwards, so things go in from above rather than being stacked in, and the opening holds its shape when the basket is empty. At 30cm high this is a floor basket rather than a shelf one, and it stands on a rug beside a cabinet. Kindling by a fire, toys in the corner of a room and rolled towels in a bathroom are all within reach of that size.

The seagrass is handwoven by a long-established method, coil laid on coil, and dyed in moss and neutral tones before it is worked, so the colour is in the grass rather than put on afterwards. Because each length of rope is wound by hand, the bands do not fall at the same height on every basket and the rim rolls a little differently on each. A shorter and a wider shape are made in the same weave.
