Description

The Rana is a candle holder 19cm tall, cut from a reclaimed wooden bed leg and left with the marks of its first life on it. The base is a squared block 8cm across with an arch cut into the front, so it stands on two feet, and a rectangular slot runs right through one side of it. Above the block the wood is turned into a collar and a stack of shallow rings, and on top of that sits an iron dish with a spike at its centre.

At 19cm tall on an 8cm square base this stands on a mantelpiece, a shelf or a dining table rather than on the floor. The spike takes a pillar candle and holds it from underneath, so the diameter is open to you and a wide candle stands as securely as a narrow one. Wax that runs down the candle collects on the iron dish below it.

Each holder is cut from a reclaimed wooden bed leg, so the carving, the shape and the patina are the ones the wood already had. Splits, saw marks and dark patches of old surface are left in rather than worked out, and no two come out with the same grain or the same tone. The dish and the spike are iron. The candle is not included.

Frequently Asked

What kind of candle does it take?

A pillar candle. It presses down onto the iron spike, so the diameter is open to you.

Is it sold singly or as a pair?

Singly. This is one candle holder.

Will every one look the same?

Not exactly. Each one is cut from a different reclaimed bed leg, so the carving, the splits and the tone of the wood vary from piece to piece.

How do I look after it?

Wash it in warm water with a mild dish soap after each use so that wax does not build up, and do not leave it to soak. Harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners should be kept away from it. Rubbing an edible oil such as olive or walnut into the wood will protect it, though it may darken the tone.

Does it get hot in use?

Yes. Stand the candle so that it is secure, keep the holder out of reach of children, let it cool fully before you move it, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
