Description

This is a small flip type converter that lets a two pin European plug meet a British socket. The folding pins tuck into a black body, and the UK pins sit on the face, so the whole thing stays neat and close to the wall. The body measures 23mm across, so it takes up little room. It is rated at 3A and passes the earth through rather than dropping it. It carries a three year warranty.

We reach for these most often with lamps and small fittings bought abroad: a bedside lamp, a desk light, a string of festoon lights. It suits anyone who has ended up with a continental plug on the end of a perfectly good flex and would rather not cut it off. It is equally handy for a European appliance in a holiday let or a rented flat. The body is slim enough to share a twin socket without crowding the plug next to it, which helps behind furniture and on a busy extension lead. Keep it indoors and dry; it has no weather protection for a garden or a bathroom.

The casing is black throughout, with no bright trim, so it disappears against dark flex and skirting boards. Cleaning takes nothing more than a wipe with a dry cloth while it is out of the socket, and a look over the pins now and then to see they are clean and straight. We keep it with the rest of our small electrical parts: lampholders, cable grips, IEC leads and a clear plugtop, so a lamp repair can be put together in one order. Nothing decorative about it, but it earns its place in the drawer.
