Description

Piero is a small stoneware vase made as a gathering of animal heads, each one open at the top to take a single stem. Six heads rise together from a round base: a pair of long-necked giraffes, an elephant with its ears spread wide, a ram with curling horns and two more, one with rounded ears and one with pointed ones, every face modelled in relief. It measures 14cm across and 10.5cm tall and weighs 0.64KG, so it is a vase for short stems and small sprigs rather than a full bunch. The piece is multicoloured, with each head glazed in its own shade.

Being small, it suits the places a tall vase would crowd: a windowsill, a bedside table, the corner of a desk, a bookshelf or the middle of a dining table. A sprig of blossom in one head gives it a light, playful look, while a short stem in each turns it into a little herd of animals in leaf. With nothing in it at all, it still stands as a small sculpture. It is made of 100% stoneware, a dense clay fired hard at high temperature, and finished in a reactive glaze. A reactive glaze moves and pools as it fires, so the speckles, runs and depth of colour vary from piece to piece, and yours will be its own. The glaze has a high gloss that catches the light on every ear, horn and trunk. It does not go in the dishwasher, so wash it by hand. Stand it on a plain surface where the colours have room to show, and keep the stems short and fine so the faces stay in view. The styling props shown are not included.
