Description

A quilted bedspread, 220cm by 240cm and 1cm thick, made from cotton and linen. The face is cream and screen printed all over with a small rust motif that repeats in even rows, each one a short upright sprig with a dot set beside it. The reverse is plain cream and carries no print at all. The two faces are quilted together in a grid of large squares by a running stitch worked by hand in rust thread, and the dashes of that stitch sit quietly in the print on the front and stand out sharply against the plain back.

At 220 by 240cm the bedspread covers a double bed with a drop on both sides, and it lies across a king bed as a top layer. It lies over a bed with the top edge turned back below the pillows. At 1cm thick it is a layer rather than a duvet, so it goes over bedding for extra weight or is folded across the foot of the bed through the summer.

The bedspread is cotton and linen, made in India. The printed pattern follows traditional Indian block motifs and is put on by screen. The quilting is Kantha, a hand running stitch passed down through generations, and it is what holds the layers together and gives the surface its texture. The Peplu is made in this size and at 220 by 140cm, in this rust and in a sage green.

Frequently Asked

What size is it?

220cm by 240cm, and 1cm thick.

Is the back printed as well?

No. The reverse is plain cream. Only the front carries the print, and the rust running stitch shows on both sides.

What is Kantha stitching?

A hand running stitch worked in rows, which quilts the layers together. It is a heritage technique passed down through generations, and here it is worked in rust thread in a grid of squares.

Will it fit a king bed?

It is made to layer across a double or a king sized bed.

How do I clean it?

Always follow the label on the product. Lift any liquid first with an absorbent tissue, then blot the area with a sponge or a clean folded towel moistened in lukewarm water, and dry the area by blowing warm air from a hair dryer across the surface so it does not water mark. Larger and more stubborn stains should be cleaned by a professional.

What other sizes and colours are there?

A 220 by 140cm size, and both sizes in a sage green.
