Description

A square panel of handwoven jute held inside a mango wood frame, 75cm across overall. The panel does not fill the frame. It hangs clear of it on all four sides, tied on with long jute threads that wrap over the frame members and run back into the weave, so a border of open space crossed by bare thread surrounds the woven face. The jute is worked in thick plaited rows that give the surface a ridged horizontal grain, and the lower edge is left raw so the ends fray out over the frame.

At 75cm square it needs about a metre of clear wall to sit in without crowding whatever stands below it. It is 3cm deep and hangs flat, and two metal plates are screwed to the top rail of the frame, so at 4.5kg it takes two fixings spread across the top rather than one central hook. Centred above a low sideboard it sits at roughly the width of the piece beneath it.

The panel is jute and the frame is mango wood, left in its own tone with the grain showing through. Jute runs from pale straw to a deeper tan along a single length, so the banding across the weave shifts from one piece to the next, and the ties are knotted by hand so their spacing varies too. The frame is a plain flat batten on all four sides with no moulding.

Frequently Asked

How is the jute panel fixed into the frame?

Long jute threads pass over the frame on all four sides and back into the weave, so the panel hangs clear of the frame rather than filling it.

How does it hang on the wall?

Two flat metal plates are screwed to the top rail. It is 3cm deep and sits flat against the wall, and it weighs 4.5kg, so use both plates rather than a single central hook.

Will every piece look the same?

No. Jute shifts in tone along a single length, and the weaving and the tying are both done by hand, so the banding across the face and the spacing of the ties differ from one to the next.

What colour is it?

Natural. The jute is undyed and the mango wood frame is left in its own tone, so the whole piece sits in the straw to tan range with no colour added.

How do I look after it?

Wipe it over with a soft dry cloth to stop dust and dirt building up in the weave.
