Description
The Pemali is a handwoven kilim panel set in a plain mango wood frame, 75cm square and 7cm deep. The weave is flat and carries no pile, so the pattern is made entirely by the run of the coloured threads: a medallion at the centre, a broad arrow form below it, and bands of small geometric shapes filling the ground out to the edge. The colours are a pale natural, a deep charcoal and an ochre that carries towards rust, with rust marks picked out at the corners. The frame is a simple square section, left pale, standing proud of the weave on all four sides.
At 75cm square it hangs on its own on a chimney breast or a stretch of plain wall, or in a pair with a second piece. The weave is flat and the frame shallow at 7cm, so the panel sits close to the wall and reads flat rather than as a box. Under a low light the ochre in the medallion goes warmer and closer to rust than it does seen flat on. It weighs 5.5kg, which is the figure to work to when choosing a fixing.
Kilim is a flat weave, worked across eastern Europe and central Asia, and the pattern is built in as the panel is woven rather than added afterwards. This one is woven from jute on a traditional loom and set in a mango wood frame. Because each panel is woven by hand the motif sits a little differently inside the frame on every one. A second Pemali wall art is made in plain natural jute.

Frequently Asked
How big is it?
75cm square and 7cm deep.
What is kilim?
A flat weave with no pile, worked across eastern Europe and central Asia, in which the pattern is made by the coloured threads themselves.
Is it framed?
Yes, in a plain mango wood frame that stands proud of the weave on all four sides.
Is the pattern the same on every panel?
The motif is the same on every panel, but it is woven by hand, so it sits a little differently inside the frame and the tones vary.
How should I look after it?
Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth so dust and dirt do not build up.
